The Jubilee Shield

The Jubilee Shield

The Jubilee shield is a club competition for mixed doubles. Partners are chosen by random draw and the system is a straightforward knockout. This year fourteen members took part on Sunday 9th July. Everything was well going well until the finals when Colin James, who was acting as organiser and captain, quite rightly decided that owing to an encroaching thunderstorm play should be suspended. At that stage Margaret Nelson and Bert Suttie were on 12 and Louise Tomlinson and Adrian Salt were on 11. The final was replayed on Saturday 29th July. On the left below you can see Margaret Nelson and Bert Suttie who won the trophy and on the right are Louise Tomlinson and Adrian Salt who were the runners up.

The President of Heversham W. I. writes:
A good bowling night was enjoyed by all on Wednesday 5th July at Heversham B.C. We had sixteen ladies competing and lots of helpers scoring, measuring, tidying up, etc..
Glenis won the Shirley Askew Trophy – she’s a regular player – she plays regularly once a year! Well done Glenis. The evening ended with a real buzz over the refreshments.
Thank you to Karen Hanks, our W.I. Federation Chair for joining us. Also a big thank you to John Smith, our Club Captain, for organising the running of the evening and to Heversham B.C. for welcoming us to this annual event.

The Green Challenge for Christie’s Hospital

The Green Challenge for
The Christie Hospital

Alan Dunham is raising money for The Christie Hospital. Nine years ago he had a stem cell transplant: now he wants to give something back. What’s he doing? He’s riding his bike to every green in the Kendal Bowling League and then playing on each green for thirty minutes. It involves 150 miles of cycling with a total ascent of 8,000 feet. Our club has kindly made a donation, but Alan also has a just giving page which you can find by copying the following link and pasting it into your browser. www.justgiving.com/page/alan-dunham-167999179836

Alan is seen below wearing the hi-vis jacket with Robin Wharfe from our club.

Update on the Green Challenge.

Dear Bowling Clubs, I’m pleased to let you know I completed my Green Challenge on Wednesday 21st June, having ridden 154 miles, 12,149 feet of ascent and bowling on 30 greens. I really enjoyed myself meeting amazing people, playing bowls and having people ride with me. If you’re interested I have put photographs and updates on my Just Giving page which is best accessed by typing :- Just Giving – search – 1679991798364

Many thanks to you all for making me so very welcome, taking time to open the greens, the offer of refreshments, great bowling and your support and encouragement. I’m very grateful for your generous donations.

Many heartfelt thanks

Alan

Friendly with Kirkby Lonsdale

Friendly with Kirkby Lonsdale

On Saturday 24th June a friendly match against Kirkby Lonsdale took place. John Smith, our Club Captain, organised the afternoon which saw fourteen players from Kirkby Lonsdale visiting us. The first part of the afternoon saw players from both clubs playing doubles against each other. This was followed by a splendid afternoon tea after which players teamed up with someone from the other team to play doubles with two jacks each. Thanks to John Smith, everyone who helped, and everyone who provided afternoon tea.

Coronation of King Charles III

Coronation

Social

Bowling

On Sunday 7th May to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III and the crowning of Camilla as Queen the club held a social bowling afternoon. The format was singles games up to 11 and then a further set of games up to 11. Refreshments were then taken including a glass of fizz. Three people finished on 24 points each – John Cross, Adrian Salt, and Charles Ellis. They then played five ends or sudden death. John Cross was the winner, with Charles Ellis coming second. Further refreshments were then taken in the form of Margaret’s Coronation Scones suitably adorned in red, white, and blue.

Entertainment was also provided by members submitting their answers to the vexed question of where Joyce had finally found her bowling glove.
