Open Competition

WHAT A SUCCESS!

Robin Wharfe, our Club Chair writes:

What a day we had for our club’s first ever Open Competition on Saturday 27th July. All the preparation ahead of the big day was met by dark clouds and torrential rain right on cue as competitors, friends, and helpers arrived for a day’s bowling.

I must firstly say a BIG thank you to everyone involved in getting the event off the ground – the clubhouse, food, gazebo, of course the green team, scorers, measurers, and anyone else who did their bit! We had a full house of players, many of whom had not played on our green before. The rain played its part until lunchtime stopping the usual long play as bowls splashed through the puddles. Eventually the sun came through allowing those left in the later stages of the competition to showcase their bowling. two close semi-finals brought the final couples together – Paul Kissock and Karren Walker against Angela Athersmith and Simon Bray. A fantastic final went back and forth eventually climaxing with a trademark strike by Paul Kissock to secure a 21 – 17 win.
Thanks must also go to our sponsors on the day, Pure Leisure, providing valuable support to the club. Throughout the day and since we have received favourable comments with many asking us to consider doing another. Once again, many thanks, we should all be very proud.

Scrumptious refreshments helped to make the day a success. We’re blessed not just with good bowlers but also good bakers. The raffle also helped to raise funds for the club.

July Round Robin

July Round Robin

The July Round Robin took place on Sunday 21st July. Fourteen members took part in an enjoyable afternoon. There were seven ladies and seven men so the competition worked out nicely as mixed doubles. The winners were Joyce Hayton and John Smith; the runners-up were Julie and Robin Wharfe; and Margaret Nelson and Bert Suttie won the loser’s prize – which led to some members wondering if you’re better off losing on purpose so at least you take home a bar of chocolate. Mmmm. Thanks to all who helped to run the afternoon.

Jubilee Shield

The Jubilee Shield

Congratulations to Adrian Salt and Martin Tomlinson who won the Jubilee Shield on Sunday 7th July. The competition is a mixed doubles competition. This year eighteen members took part. The competition began at 1.30pm and lasted until after 6.00pm. At the beginning of the afternoon players were donning their waterproofs as yet again a summer afternoon was marred by rain. However, the weather gradually improved throughout the afternoon eventually becoming warm and sunny. The runners-up were Charles Ellis and Mike Warwick. Thanks to our Club Captain, Vera Alderson who organised and ran the afternoon.

As a matter of interest Peter Wightman is a relatively new member of our club, and it was his father-in-law, Eric Proctor, who donated the Shield.

The picture on the left below shows, from left to right, Robin Wharfe, the Club Chair; Martin and Adrian the winners receiving the Jubilee Shield and their prizes; and Vera the Club Captain. On the right you can see Charles and Mike receiving their prizes as runners-up.

W.I. Shirley Askew Trophy

On Wednesday 4th July the annual competition for the Shirley Askew Trophy was held. The competition is held between members of the Heversham W.I. and lady members of the bowling club. This year twelve ladies took part on what should have been a summer evening, but, as everyone said, summer hasn’t arrived this year. The results this year were Dorothy Maudsley, winner from the bowling club; Hilary James, runner-up from the bowling club; Louise Tomlinson, winner from the W.I. and therefore winner of the Shirley Askew Trophy; and Margaret Nelson, runner-up from the W.I.. After the match everyone retired to the clubhouse for refreshments of cake and Pimms. Thanks once again to John Smith for doing all the paperwork, and thanks to all the members of the club who turned up to help.

Below on the left you can see Maggie Hart, the W.I. President awarding the trophy and prize to Louise, while on the right you can see Margaret receiving her prize.

June Round Robin

June Round Robin

Twelve members took part in the June Round Robin which was held on Sunday 30th June. After recent experiences of playing in conditions varying from cold torrential rain to unbearably hot and sultry weather it was a pleasant change to bowl on an overcast but pleasant afternoon. The afternoon consisted of pairs playing five games of six ends each game. Congratulations to the winners Joyce and Martin, and to the runners-up Alison and Colin. Once again thanks go to John Smith for organising the event.

Blue Bell Trophy

Blue Bell Trophy

On Sunday 2nd June sixteen club members took part in the competition for the Blue Bell Trophy. The competition is a straightforward knockout with opponents chosen by a random draw. It was played on a lovely afternoon with just enough breeze to stop the weather becoming too hot. Sixteen participants meant that there were four rounds in total. The afternoon saw some great bowling. The finalists were Mike Warwick and Martin Tomlinson. Congratulations to Martin who won the trophy for the second year in succession. Thanks to Vera, our Club Captain, for organising the event which ran so smoothly.

Coronation Anniversary Round Robin

CORONATION
ANNIVERSARY
ROUND
ROBIN

On Sunday 5th May the second Round Robin of the season took place. This time the Round Robin was held to mark the anniversary of the Coronation of King Charles III. Fourteen members took part on a pleasantly warm afternoon with refreshments part way through. Congratulations to the winners Susan and Charles Ellis. Two couples had equal results for second place with equal wins and aggregate scores: Julie and Martin, and Louise and Robin, were tied on 10 points for wins and 18 points on aggregate. Second place was therefore decided by a sudden death play off which was won by Julie and Martin. This time there was a booby prize – names won’t be mentioned but you might be able to guess who won it when you see the photos below. Thanks again to John Smith who organised the event and to all who provided refreshments and helped.

Bowls Big Weekend 2024

The club supported the Big Bowls Weekend on Sunday 26th May with 10 members braving the inclement weather to enjoy a afternoons social bowling.

Two potential new members joined in and were introduced to the game and coached by Colin and Tom. Both appeared comfortable on the green and looked ‘natural’ with the bowls.

The rain continued so everyone retired to the clubhouse for tea and cake.

Thanks to those who endured the weather and to supplying the, as usual, tasty fare.
