Round Robin July 3rd

Round Robin July 3rd

On Sunday July 3rd fourteen club members gathered to contest the season’s third Round Robin. On this occasion, unlike some of the matches, the weather was fair. The winners were Joyce Hayton and John Smith with 9 points and an aggregate of +5; while the runners-up were Julie Wharfe and John Alderson with 8 points and an aggregate of +18. Once again many thanks to John Smith for organising the event.

The Blue Bell Trophy

The Blue Bell Trophy

On Sunday 12th June the competition for the Blue Bell Trophy took place. The competition began at 1.30pm and finished around 5.30pm. Fifteen club members took part. The weather was blustery winds with intermittent showers with people commenting that it didn’t feel like June at all. The competition is a straightforward knockout with handicaps. Martin Tomlinson played Charles Ellis, and Vera Alderson played Mike Warick in the semi-finals. Mike and Charles went through to the final with Charles being successful in winning the Trophy.

Once again many thanks to John Smith for his hard work in organising the event. John, the Club Captain is seen on the left ready to present the prizes. Centre is Mike receiving his prize and on the right Charles is seen receiving the Trophy and a bottle of wine.

Sixteen members played in the Jubilee Round Robin. It was played in grey conditions with some intermittent rain. Once again, besides the bowling, members enjoyed the fun and friendship, not to mention the refreshments. Wine was available either with the refreshments or after the Round Robin was over. It’s not clear whether the winners were helped by having a glass of wine during the break in play. It’s suspected that some players had a glass of wine afterwards as a commiseration. Once again many thanks to John Smith for his hard work in sorting everything out.

The winners of the Jubilee Round Robin were: First – Hilary and Martin; Second – Helen and Tom; Third – Susan and Charles. Top left is Hilary faced with the difficult decision of whether to choose wine or wine. Middle top are Martin and Hilary the winners. Top right are Tom and Helen shaking hands. Bottom left is Tom getting carried away congratulating Helen. Bottom right is Susan. The prizes were awarded by our Club Chair, Vera.

Round Robin May 1st

First Round Robin of the Year

Sunday May 1st saw the first Round Robin of the year. The day was drizzly and grey, but spirits weren’t dampened and the fourteen members who took part enjoyed the bowling and the friendship. Of course, half way through members enjoyed refreshments and a chat in the club house.

In fourth place were Joyce and Colin; third were Susan and John Cross; second were Margaret and Bert; and the winners were Hilary and Charles.

Once again, many thanks to John Smith for organising the afternoon and sorting out all the paperwork.

Coaching Afternoon

On Sunday 24th April the Club organised a well attended coaching afternoon. Colin James, the Club Coach, seen here on the right, organised practical exercises on the green; some basic Laws of the Game were explained; and those who attended were videoed so that their delivery could be assessed.

The Most Improved Player of the Year.

The 2022 AGM was held in The Athenaeum on 30th January. During the course of the meeting Mark Hutchinson was awarded the trophy for The Most Improved Player of the Year. The trophy was presented by Colin James, our Club Captain in 2021. Congratulations Mark.

Ladies’ Singles and Men’s Singles

On Sunday 5th September the Club held the competition for the Ladies’ Singles and the Men’s Singles. Eight ladies and eight men took part. The weather was pleasant and warm. Before the final games were played members retired to the clubhouse for a sumptuous afternoon tea.

Being sufficiently invigorated by the delicious food the finalists took to the green again.

The final games were Hilary James v Susan Ellis with Susan winning; and Adrian Salt v Charles Ellis with Charles winning.

Once again, a big thank you to all who helped to organise the afternoon and to those who provided a wonderful spread of food.

He’s allowed to do that – they’re married!

Leasgill Trophy

On Sunday the first of August 11 club members battled it out for the Leasgill Trophy. Conditions were ideal – dry and neither too cold nor too hot. The semi-finalists were Susan Ellis, Vera Alderson, Joyce Hayton, and Margaret Nelson. Susan and Joyce went through to a thrilling final with Joyce emerging triumphant.

Jubilee Shield

Sixteen Club members turned out to vie for the Jubilee Shield, (and the bottles of wine!), on Sunday 11th July. The day was warm, dry, and at times sultry. The Jubilee Shield is a doubles competition with no handicaps and a straightforward knockout system. For those who got through to the final this means that they’d played three games of doubles.

The runners up were Julie Wharfe and John Smith, while congratulations go to the winners Hilary James and Adrian Salt.

Those who took part also found time to enjoy refreshments including delicious home-made cakes.

Thanks again to John Smith, and to Colin James, our Club Captain for sorting out the afternoon.
