Ladies’ and Men’s Singles

Ladies’ and Men’s Singles

The sky was overcast, the atmosphere was humid and oppressive, but at least it was dry . . . until the heavens opened and the green was almost turned into a lake. Still, on the bright side, thunderstorms had been predicted and at least they didn’t arrive.

This year six ladies and eleven men took part in the Ladies’ and Men’s Singles Competition. The finalists needed stamina as well as skill as it was a long afternoon which began at 1.30pm and finished at 6.00pm. The semi-finalists on the ladies’ side were Vera Alderson and Dorothy Maudsley; and Louise Tomlinson and Julie Wharfe. Vera and Julie went through to the finals with Julie being this year’s winner.
On the men’s side the semi-finalists were John Smith and Bert Suttie; and Adrian Salt and Martin Tomlinson. Bert and Martin won through to the final, by which time the green was awash, with Bert being the eventual winner.

Congratulations to Julie and Bert. As you can see from the photo on the right, Bert looks every inch a winner.

Below on the left you can see Vera, our Club Captain, with Robin Wharfe, our Club Chair; and on the right Julie receiving the rose bowl and roses not only from the Club Captain, but also a delighted husband. Thanks go to Margaret Nelson who presented the rose bowl to the club as a prize to be awarded to the winning lady and who also buys roses for the bowl each year.

Below on the left you can see Martin Tomlinson receiving his prize as runner-up and on the right Bert receiving the decanter and bottle of whisky. The decanter was presented to the club by Peter and Jill Shaw and each year Jill kindly sends a donation to the club for the whisky to go with it.

August Round Robin

Fourteen members took part in the August Round Robin which was held on Sunday 18th August. As usual the Round Robin took the form of doubles with each pair playing six games of six ends per game. This time Susan and Martin were the clear winning pair. Second place was a closer finish with Alison and Robin and Charles and Louise having 8 points each. The runners up, however were Alison and Robin as their aggregate score was 12 while the aggregate for Louise and Charles was 6. As usual, especial thanks to John Smith for organising the event.

Visit from Salts Bowling Club

Visit from Salts Bowling Club

Robin Wharfe, our Club Chair writes:-

Sunday 11th August brought Salts Bowling Club, from Saltaire near Bradford, to a sunny and warm Heversham for a day of fun but very competitive bowling. We met them with tea and biscuits and then John Smith set about arranging singles games based on suggested rankings provided by their Captain Martin Sherred. Some close games followed, and it became clear that they play to a good standard, resulting in a 9-3 win to Salts. A lovely buffet followed which was well received by our visitors.
The afternoon schedule allowed us to mix and match, doubles being the choice. Each pair played 2 games of 6 ends with the aggregate determining a winner. Our Colin James and Salts Chris Wormesly won with a +13 aggregate. The day ended with a presentation by Club Chair, Robin Wharfe, of a commemorative glass trophy to Salts Chair Brian Tempest. Robin thanked them for choosing our club and suggested a return fixture next season. Brian thanked us for our hospitality, generous lunch, and friendly, social atmosphere. He also donated £70.00p towards our club funds.
Overall a fabulous day was enjoyed by all. Thanks to everyone who made it such a success.

LEASGILL TROPHY

Sunday 4th August saw sixteen club members competing for the Leasgill Trophy. The trophy was kindly donated by longstanding members of the club Maureen and Gordon Coleclough. The standard of bowling throughout the afternoon was excellent. The finalists were Susan Ellis and Robin Wharfe with Susan winning the trophy after her results of 21-7; 21-7; 21-13; and 21-8. Many thanks to all who helped to make the afternoon yet another success, and particularly to Vera Alderson, our Club Chair, for running the afternoon.

Open Competition

WHAT A SUCCESS!

Robin Wharfe, our Club Chair writes:

What a day we had for our club’s first ever Open Competition on Saturday 27th July. All the preparation ahead of the big day was met by dark clouds and torrential rain right on cue as competitors, friends, and helpers arrived for a day’s bowling.

I must firstly say a BIG thank you to everyone involved in getting the event off the ground – the clubhouse, food, gazebo, of course the green team, scorers, measurers, and anyone else who did their bit! We had a full house of players, many of whom had not played on our green before. The rain played its part until lunchtime stopping the usual long play as bowls splashed through the puddles. Eventually the sun came through allowing those left in the later stages of the competition to showcase their bowling. two close semi-finals brought the final couples together – Paul Kissock and Karren Walker against Angela Athersmith and Simon Bray. A fantastic final went back and forth eventually climaxing with a trademark strike by Paul Kissock to secure a 21 – 17 win.
Thanks must also go to our sponsors on the day, Pure Leisure, providing valuable support to the club. Throughout the day and since we have received favourable comments with many asking us to consider doing another. Once again, many thanks, we should all be very proud.

Scrumptious refreshments helped to make the day a success. We’re blessed not just with good bowlers but also good bakers. The raffle also helped to raise funds for the club.
