Overview

The club is relatively new in Bowling terms, having been established for 23 years in Leasgill, Heversham. It’s been described as ‘ A very friendly club’, ‘ A great asset to the community ‘, and a place ‘ To learn a new skill’

We welcome experienced bowlers and those who have never set foot on a Crown Green. It’s never too late, or early, to start.

We are a competitive club with teams across several leagues throughout Kendal and South Lakes. Of course, competition is important – who does not like to win; however we are a friendly club, making anyone welcome who wishes to come along and give our game a go – young or old.

Socially, we are an active club, with activities off the green, raising funds through a variety of events.

The green is open from mid-March until October.

Please look through our website, and if you like what you see, then feel free to contact our Club Secretary, Tom Grindey on 07385999387 or email tomgrindeybowler@gmail.com

Ladies’ and Men’s Singles

Vera Alderson, our Club Chair, writes:-

On Sunday 7th September we held the Ladies’ and Gent’s Singles competitions. The green was in excellent condition, but sadly the weather was very wet. Despite the persistent rain the standard of bowling was very high in such challenging conditions.

The Ladies’ final was between Louise Tomlinson and Julie Wharfe with Louise winning with a score of 21/9. Louise was presented with the Rose Bowl Trophy, along with some roses and a bottle of sparkling wine, by Margaret Nelson. Margaret is the sponsor of the Ladies’ Trophy.

The Men’s final was between Colin James and Adrian Tayler – Colin won the game with a score of 21/14. Margaret also presented Colin with the trophy of a decanter and a bottle of whisky. Peter and Gillian Shaw, previous members of the club, sponsored the Men’s Trophy.

The runners-up, Julie and Adrian, were each presented with a bottle of wine.

The afternoon was enjoyed by all, despite the weather, and the cakes provided by Louise were much appreciated. This was the last trophy competition of the season and now we can look forward to next season.

Below on the left you can see Louise being awarded with the Rose Bowl and on the right is Colin James receiving the decanter and whisky.

August Round Robin

On Sunday 24th August 15 club members plus Lorna Shields, a visitor from Silverdale Bowling Club, took part in the August Round Robin. The sun was shining, and it was a hot afternoon, but those taking part battled through the heat playing seven rounds of six ends per round. It was especially nice to see Shirley and John Cross who came to enjoy the sunshine, and hopefully the bowling.

The winners were Susan and Charles Ellis with Joyce Hayton and Mike Warwick the runners up. Thanks once again to John Smith for organising the event. Pictured below are Susan and Charles receiving their prizes from Vera Alderson, our Club Captain.

End of Season Fun Evening

AKA What do we do now? Or, What did he say?

On the evening of Thursday 21st August members from our teams in the Kendal League, the South Westmorland Seniors League, and the Rural League gathered for an evening of extraordinary bowling challenges devised by Ian Telford. Ian himself kept out of the challenges under the pretext of keeping the scores. Members were subjected to playing the jack with the non-dominant hand and then the bowls with the dominant hand; playing the jack with the dominant hand and the bowls with the non-dominant hand; sending the bowls first and then sending the jack; and bowling one bowl with the dominant hand and the other with the non-dominant hand – I think!! The mental gymnastics were as difficult as the games. No wonder the most often heard questions were, “What do we do now?” “What did he say?”

At the end of the evening Robin Wharfe gained 10 points and Louise Tomlinson 9 points. Everyone else was pleased to forget their score as they returned to the club house for refreshments.

Thanks to Ian and the team captains for organising things.
